Writing to Learn
How to Write and Think Clearly About Any Subject at All
William Zinsser argues that writing is a way to think through and learn any subject, not just English, and gathers clear writing from science, math, art and other fields to show how.
Write-up
In Writing to Learn, William Zinsser takes the reader on an engaging personal journey through various fields of knowledge, revealing that every subject has accessible and enjoyable literature. One of the book’s strengths is its ability to explore diverse topics while maintaining coherence and flow, without feeling like a mere collection of quotes. Zinsser skillfully incorporates a variety of writing styles, weaving in segments from other writers to illustrate his points.
For me, the strongest section was Writing Mathematics, where Zinsser demonstrates how even complex subjects can be communicated clearly and beautifully. In contrast, Worlds of Music felt like the weakest part of the book, lacking the same interest (for me at least) as other sections.
